Food / Friends / Fun

laughtogeather

these are three of the most important things in my life.  tonight i had the blessing of enjoying all three simultaneously.  as i have grown up i have become increasingly aware of the joy of sharing food and laughter with friends.  this is not just a feel good social exercise, but as we do we learn what it means to be human and in relationship to those around us and maybe in some mystical way learn and experience the presence of a much greater force in our communal fellowship.

can i suggest that if you have the opportunity to share some time with a group of friends in the next week, take the opportunity and see if you experience life, and the spirit, in the midst of food, fun and friends.

Ally and I are still feeling we are on holidays and yesterday we called round to my mums house and saw me wee sister (Catherine) who is now very pregnant with number two due in 3 weeks or so. We got to enjoy the company of my nephew Thomas (Catherine’s no1) who was great fun. Here is a wee pic of him and all his cuteness.

29th Birthday.

Just for those of you who are interested here is how Ally celebrated her 29th birthday today (15th May 2008).

1st champagne and scrambled eggs on toast. Yes really.

2nd trip to Saintfield one of Ally’s childhood hang out places. Then to Ards shopping centre to buy some ‘suuperdry’ clothing.
(boots and ‘t’ shirt).

Then on to Donaghadee garden centre to buy a coat rack and some twinkle lights for the back garden.

Then home for a wee rest then out to ‘Deans at Queens’ for tea.

What a day.

First-born children bear the brunt of family discipline as their parents strive to exert their authority, according to new research.

Mothers and fathers mete out harsher punishments on their eldest children to keep them in line.

First borns are also more likely to suffer financial penalties – such as having pocket money stopped – academics claim.

However when younger children come along they are increasingly allowed to “get away with murder” in the home because parents grow tired of so-called tough love.

The report, published today, says second, third or fourth born children run a greater chance of going off the rails when they grow up.

According to academics, they are more likely to drop out of school, drink, take drugs or become teenage parents.

The findings – in a study published in the Economic Journal – will raise fresh questions about the way some parents raise their children.

Ginger Zhe Jin, an assistant professor of economics at Maryland University, in the United States, who co-wrote the report, said: “Tender-hearted parents find it harder and harder to engage in ‘tough love’ since, as they have fewer young children in the house, they have less incentive to uphold reputations as disciplinarians.

“As a result, the theory predicts that last-born and only children, knowing that they can get away with much more than their older brothers and sisters, are, on average, more likely to engage in risky behaviour.”

Academics studied data from the US Bureau of Labour Statistics to find out how children born at different times turned out.

First-born children were generally better behaved and less likely to get into serious trouble in their teenage years, says the report.

Second or third-born children were also more skilled at “playing the system” after seeing how their older siblings were treated by their parents, the researchers found.

A revolution begins with and idea and a first step. Tonight a few of us made the first step in our adventure of becoming part of the solution.

A big thanks to all of you, you know who you are.

This is just the beginning……

Stuartie & Ally.
